Practice Areas

  • Terris’ team is made up of professionals with substantial experience with the federal False Claims Act. Whistleblowers are now driving the fight to expose the waste of taxpayer dollars through fraud against the government. Whistleblowers accomplish this through the False Claims Act (FCA)—the federal statute that allows private individuals to bring a qui tam lawsuit against an individual or entity defrauding the government. If successful, whistleblowers, also called “relators,” are entitled to a portion of the recovered funds under the FCA. These recoveries can be substantial. The importance of whistleblowers cannot be overstated and recognizes and respects the contributions that whistleblowers make to protecting taxpayers. Terris believes in pursuing meritorious cases on behalf of whistleblowers. We also believe in helping companies accused of wrongdoing investigate allegations, correct any deficiencies they may encounter, and reach favorable resolutions. This rare perspective means we are exceptionally well positioned to advise you about a potential whistleblower claim. Terris and his team are highly experienced lawyers who, only after careful consideration, agree to represent the claims of select whistleblowers. We do not take every case, nor do we believe the number of cases we have at any given time is a measure of our success. Instead, we select only the best cases, allowing us the ability to become fully immersed in the factual and legal details necessary to bring cases to successful resolutions. For defendants, we offer the same interdisciplinary approach, substantive subject area depth, and successful track record. By way of example, we have assisted with health care compliance to hospitals, home health agencies, physicians, accounting firms, educational institutions, hospices and nursing homes in both criminal and civil false claims investigations. Our unique approach and case experience enable us to efficiently and effectively assess and either prosecute or defend False Claims Act cases in virtually every substantive area of concern. Our experience is further enhanced by close relationships with a range of forensic experts who are familiar with the collection and analysis of False Claims Act data and the assessment of potential False Claims Act damages.

  • As a trial lawyers, Terris and his team meet people every day who have been injured by defective products, toxic chemicals, or careless and reckless acts of other people. We've recovered substantial amounts on behalf of personal injury and property damage victims, and we've also successfully defended companies and professionals accused of causing injuries. We gain a unique perspective and added expertise from representing both plaintiffs and defendants over the years.

Terris litigates personal injury, premise liability and wrongful death lawsuits to seek accountability and change, as well as compensation for damages such as medical expenses, loss of income, long-term care and rehabilitation. Too often, public safety is compromised by:

    • Defective Products and Product Recalls: Consumer and worker safety is too often put at risk by negligence, poor manufacturing, inadequate quality, product recalls, or inadequate warnings or labels on a wide range of products.
    • Fires, Explosions and Burn Injuries: Sudden explosions, property fires, industrial explosions and defective products can cause serious, life-altering injuries.
    • Train, Truck and Bus Injuries: The failure of mass transportation businesses such as trucking, bus or train companies to meet established standards is also a failure to protect other passengers on the road.
    • Catastrophic Motorcycle Crashes: Drivers and passengers of motorcycles often suffer life-altering injuries in crashes, including brain and spinal cord injuries and lost limbs. We work to protect crash victims’ rights when they have been injured by someone else’s negligence.
    • Childhood Injuries: It may seem like you can never do enough to keep your child safe, but there is a terrible difference between injuries that happen under a parent’s cautious supervision and injuries caused by a manufacturer or premise owner’s negligence, such as elevator injuries.
    • Head Trauma and Brain Injuries: When a person or company fails to take the steps necessary to create a safe product or environment and you suffer a traumatic injury as a result, such as carbon monoxide poisoning or near drowning, we believe that the violator should be held accountable.
    • Spinal Injuries: Spinal injuries can have a sudden and devastating impact on the injured, as well as on loved ones, that can be incredibly difficult to deal with, especially when they occur because of someone else’s neglect.
    • Premises Liability: the owner of property is responsible for providing a safe environment for any guests or people who have the right to be on or near the property. People often suffer personal harm due to the failure of a property owner—an individual or a business-- to take reasonable steps to ensure that the building is safe to those who use or occupy it, whether it’s a shooting, drowning, fight, accident, etc.
  • Terris and his dedicated legal team at The Cochran Firm have the experience, commitment, and compassion to help guide your claim toward its most positive resolution. Obtaining the compensation to which you are entitled is essential to your ability to follow the difficult path toward a complete recovery after a serious injury, and our skilled truck accident attorneys are here to help.

Terris represents injured passengers and the families of those who have suffered tragedy as a result of commercial trucking accidents. Our catastrophic personal injury attorneys have the knowledge, experience and resources to investigate and resolve cases involving large trucks and to represent people who have suffered from serious injury and wrongful death.

A thriving trucking industry is critical to our nation’s economy. As consumer demand continues to grow, the trucking industry struggles to keep up. The fact is, however, that there are tens of thousands of injury-causing semi accidents in the United States every year, and thousands of these accidents end in traffic fatalities.

While the trucking industry is essential to our bustling American economy, it is also responsible for managing safe fleets that are well-maintained and that are driven by well-qualified truckers who adhere to all relevant driving restrictions. When trucking companies – or truck drivers – attempt to cut corners in order to keep up with demand and maximize profits, they endanger everyone with whom they share the roads. Accidents involving big rigs, due to their massive size and weight, are many times more likely to cause serious injuries and/or fatalities.

Terris and his team approach each case with a set of criteria to examine on top of any additional concerns particular to that crash. Our crash reconstruction experts rarely conclude that a single factor caused an accident. Most often multiple factors end up contributing to the cause of the accident. Some factors that may be involved include:

    • Driver training
    • Traffic signals
    • Truck driver negligence
      • Alcohol or over-the-counter or prescription drug use
      • Distracted driving
      • Driving too fast for conditions
      • Fatigue
      • Unfamiliarly with the roadway
    • Trucking company negligence
    • Weather conditions
